We’re so glad that you have chosen to submit a film to POWFest!  Here are some FAQs to help you along in the process!

What is the submission deadline? Is there a fee?

Early Bird Deadline – June 17, 2016 – $25 Submission Fee
Regular Deadline – August 19, 2016 – $40 Submission Fee

Extended Deadline – September 16, 2016 – $70 Submission Fee

Entries for the Young Filmmaker category (open to young women 18 years or younger) are $10.  Youth Filmmakers can request up to two youth submission waivers by filling out this google form.

Why are you asking about my age and other demographic information?

POWFest is extremely committed to ensuring equitable representation in our programming. Having this demographic information, for both in front of and behind the camera, allows us to hold ourselves accountable throughout the screening and programming process. We are currently working on a report that outlines 2016’s results and plan to publish a report each year as part of the accountability process. Once we publish 2016’s results, we will post a link here so you can see how the information is being used.

Why doesn’t my entry show as “In Consideration” in Withoutabox?

When films are submitted via Withoutabox, it automatically puts it into “submitted” status. We review the submissions to make sure they are complete and once they are, we manually change them to “In Consideration.” As checking films is not an automated process, there may be a short delay especially on weekends. Thank you for your patience with our small team.

When will I know whether my film is selected to be screened as a part of POWFest?

Filmmakers will be notified in mid-January 2017 if their film has been selected to screen as part of POWFest or POWFest Monthly.

Can I submit more than one film?

Yes! You can submit as many films as you want to; however, a separate entry form and fee is required with each submission.

What payment methods/currencies do you accept for submission fees?

We only accept payments in US Dollars.  You can pay via Withoutabox, Film Freeway, personal check, business check or money order.  If you are paying by check or money order, please make it payable to the PORTLAND OREGON WOMEN’S FILM FESTIVAL and send it to 1526 NE Alberta Street, #110, Portland, OR 97211. How can I submit to POWFest?

What are the basic criteria for film submissions?

The only hard and fast rules are that films must be directed (or co-directed) by a woman and it has to have been completed within 3 years of the current festival cycle (for 2017, it needs to have been completed in 2014 or later).  POWFest does not accept works in progress. There are no limits on genre, format, content, duration. language or country of origin. (Note! Non-English language films must be subtitled in English).

What formats are accepted for my submission?

POWFest only accepts electronic submissions.  You can submit via Film Freeway or Withoutabox, including a link to your film and a password to access it. Please note! If your film is posted on Vimeo, YouTube or other online platform, it must be set to private and password protected in order to submit to the festival.

Why don’t you accept DVD’s anymore?

Online streaming technology has improved greatly over the past few years. That combined with our desire to lessen POWFest’s environmental impact has led us to change the way we accept submission screeners.

Can I submit to POWFest?

It is POWFest’s goal to be inclusive of all women’s voices, regardless of race, class, age, religion, abilities, sexuality or gender presentation. We respect each individual’s right to gender self-determination.

Being both trans-inclusive and women-focused means that all directors who self-identify as women are welcome to submit films to POWFest and their films will be given equal consideration for programming. Films by directors who do not self-identify as women will only be considered in the event that they are co-directed by a self-identified woman who is credited as a director or co-director in the film’s credits and marketing materials.

Why is this festival only for Women Filmmakers?

Film making is still a very male-dominated career path.  In the most recent Celuloid Ceiling Report it was reported that for 250 top grossing films of 2014, women accounted for 7% of directors (which is 2% fewer than back in 1998). In 2014, 93% of films had no female directors. Men outnumbered women 5-to-1 in key, behind-the-camera roles in 2014: Of the 2,822 directors, writers and producers, only 17% were female. This is the same percentage of women working in these roles in 1998.  Additionally, 38% of films employed 0 or 1 woman in the roles considered, whereas there were no films that employed 0 or only 1 man in the roles considered. These numbers are compounded by the recent reporting that every film scheduled for release by 20th Century Fox and Paramount between now and 2018 will be directed by men.

POWFest exists to help change these statistics. Our over-arching goal is to provide a space where women can thrive as media makers. One key aspect of this work is to provide visibility to women directors during the March film festival and the monthly extended festival.

How does POW decide whether a film will be programmed for the festival in March or the monthly extended festival?

Both programs are amazing opportunities to connect with audience members, but are very different types of events. POWFest programmers will decide which platform will best showcase the merits of individual films.

How do I know what category my film fits into?

Narrative Features are a minimum of 40 minutes total run time and tell a fictional or fictionalized story, event or narrative. In this style of film, believable narratives and characters help convince the audience that the unfolding fiction is real. They may be based on true events or fictitious. Narrative Shorts are the same as above, but with a total run time of under 40 minutes.

Documentary Features are a minimum of 40 minutes total run time and is intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. Documentary Shorts are the same as above, but with a total run time of under 40 minutes.

Experimental Shorts are under 40 minutes total run time and are neither narratives nor documentaries.  They are often highly artistic and may not have characters or plots in the traditional sense.

Animation Shorts are under 40 minutes total run time and are created using a simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frames.  The frames can be created using a variety of 2D and/or 3D methods including but not limited to drawings, digital renderings or models.

The Young Women Filmmakers category is reserved for filmmakers 18 years of age or younger. Films submitted in this category must be made by a woman/girl who is 18 or younger and the content must be targeted at a youth/teen audiences. Films can be of any length.

Music Videos are short films under 8 minutes that seek to visually represent a piece of music. This is a new category for POWFest.

Webseries submissions should be a short composition under 10 minutes that is intended for distribution using an online platform such as YouTube.

What if my film could fit into several of the categories listed?  Can I choose more than one?

There are many films that do not fit cleanly into one of the categories, and that’s ok.  Just pick the one that is the closest/best fit.

That being said, if you have a piece that is filmed in a unique manner, but it tells a narrative story or is a documentary, please submit it as a narrative or documentary not an experimental film.
